Celebration
of The Life And Times Of Mary Slessor By Her True Descendants
The Children and Grandchildren of Late Elder Daniel Henrison McArthur
Slessor (Mary’s son) commenced the celebration of the life and times of
Mary Slessor of evergreen memory as they recounted her giant strides in the
sands of times.
This was done by a post humus birthday celebration through a wreath
laying exercise in her honour, first by her descendants, the church and also
prominent sons and daughters of Efik nation.
The Mary Slessor True Descendants worked in collaboration
with the The Palace of the Obong of Calabar, Cross River State Carnival
Commission and the media houses - Cross River Broadcasting Corporation
(CRBC), Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and FADFM & HITFM who have
contributed immensely in sensitizing the populace on the rich and unique
history of Mary Slessor.
The family expressed their profound gratitude to the government of Cross
River State for their wisdom in the appreciation of the good works of Mary
Slessor by immortalizing her via erecting a befitting effigy and naming a major
carnival route after our beloved mother.
And the support of His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu (V), The Obong of Calabar, Natural Ruler, Treaty King And
The Grand Patriarch of the Efik Kingdom and Other Eminent Royal Fathers,
recognising the critical role their throne played in their respective domains in
the emergence and sustenance of Christianity to this part of the world,
supporting Mary Slessor and her works in Africa.
The works of the Mary Slessor in this part of the world cannot be
complete without the ample mention of the Church of Scotland Mission
now The Presbyterian Church Of Nigeria, the teeming support of the Chiefs
And the People Of Akpap-Okoyong. The
socio religious vehicle upon which our mother rode to prominence in Africa.
Cross River Carnival Commission partnership with the Mary Slessor True Descendants
and projecting the works and ideals of not just Mary Slessor but also the rich
enduring culture of the African people through the Calabar Carnival.
She thrived boldly and successfully to even where men didn’t venture to
reach out for missions, were she selflessly worked, fought, won and then
stopped the killing of twins and other barbaric vices.
