The Best Beach Sports You May Not Have Heard Of

The Best Beach Sports You May Not Have Heard Of, StockSnap_21EKVRQ8NR.jpg

If you don’t spend much time at the beach, you probably think that when it comes to beach sports, there’s surfing or beach volleyball and that’s about it. To be fair, people that spend more than enough time at the beach are often only aware of the most popular sports.

However, there is a massive range of other sports to try on the beach. Many of which are growing in popularity all over the world. Here are just a few of the best beach sports you’re probably unaware of.

Paddle Boarding

A paddle board is like a surfboard but with more options. You can lie on them, and paddle with your arms. You can stand on them and use a paddle to propel you forwards, in which case you’ll need the best sup, or stand up paddle board. You can kneel on them. You can even keep them stationary and use them as a fishing platform. Paddle boarding is an excellent way into beach sports if you’ve never tried any before as it gives you so many options.

Scuba Diving

Most of us have heard of scuba diving, but if you’ve never tried it, you might not think of it as a sport. Scuba diving is incredibly physical and takes a lot of strength and stamina. While also being a fantastic way to see nature and discover underwater beauty

Body Surfing

Body surfing is done on a smaller, wider board. You lie on it, with your legs hanging over the back and ride either into or with waves. In some countries, it’s known as body boarding. Body surfing is a great option for families with younger children as it’s safer than surfing and anyone can have a go without needing tuition or guidance.

Wake-boarding

Wakeboarding is a little like paddle boarding in the sense that you can stand, sit or lie on your board. Beginners often start by kneeling and then progress to standing as their balance and technique improves. You can wake-board either being pulled by a cable on a specially fitted lake or behind a boat, like jet skiing.

Slacklining

Slacklining is a little different from either water sports or beach based ball games. A line of flat webbing is tied to two trees or posts, creating a tightrope like effect. Slackliners then walk across this suspended material. Skilled slackliners can jump and perform tricks in the air before landing to continue their walk. Slacklining is all about balance, concentration and skill.

Open Water Swimming

You’ve probably heard of people swimming in the sea or even had a go yourself, but did you know that it could be a sport? Open water swimming is often part of triathlons, but can also be a sport in its own right with 10km races the most popular distance.  Long distance open water swimming requires huge amounts of stamina, strength and self-motivation as it is truly challenging. Don’t be tempted to try a long distance until you’ve completed an intense training program.

As you can see, there are absolutely loads of sports you can try at the beach. Give some a go to find the ones you like.
