Sick of the same US TV shows or simply want to broaden your horizons? Whilst US channels are now getting a lot of international imports, there are still lots of shows out there that are yet to cross over to America. Here are some of the best places to discover and catch international TV shows.
Netflix
Streaming services like Netflix are great for catching foreign TV shows. In fact, since it first started, Netflix has been making a drift from big budget mainstream shows and Hollywood movies in exchange for independent cinema and international imports.
Sweden’s Wallander is a detective show available on the streaming service that has taken over the world for its gritty and gripping storytelling. France’s Les Revenants, also available on Netflix, is a supernatural thriller about a village’s dead residents coming back to life.
In fact, international thrillers are one of Netflix’s biggest specialities with foreign hit TV shows such as Marseilles, The Code and The Killer also streamable through this platform.
Youtube
Youtube has a number of international TV shows which you can subscribe to and watch for a small fee. These include German hits such as Deutschland ’83 and Hindi TV show CID. Many of these are in their home tongue without subtitles so may only be suitable for new US citizens still wanting to tune into TV from their home countries.
You may find snippets of other TV shows on Youtube for free but it’s unlikely you’ll find whole series due to copyright infringement.
Specialist Sites
There are plenty of specialist sites for information on foreign TV. The likes of Ani.me can provide information on anime news for eager fans of Japanese shows, including the latest English dubs available. Nordic Noir TV meanwhile offers lots of information on the latest Scandinavian thrillers. Some of these sites also offer links to places where you can stream these TV shows.
IMDB
Whilst you can’t stream shows on IMDB, this database does provide some great information on every TV series around the world that you can think of, including links to reviews by publications. IMDB can also recommend TV shows based on ones you like. For researching new shows, this is the place to go.
iTunes
If you’re looking to download foreign TV shows, then your best option is iTunes. The Apple service has a vast selection of TV shows on it from across the world. You can download a whole series or buy single episodes if you just want a taster first.
