If there is a buzzword in the auto industry in 2017, it’s driverless. Every from Tesla to Uber is trying to negotiate the terrain with varying degrees of success. Even Google is planning on getting in on the action. What this should tell the savvy among you is that driverless cars are here to stay.
At least, they will be when they arrive. With that in mind, here’s what you will need to know for when the revolution takes place. Happy sitting in the passenger seat while a robot chauffeurs you around town!
Driver Or Passenger?
According to people like Nick Reed, it will be the choice of the driver. So, if you enjoy switching gears and hitting the gas pedal, you still can. But, if you prefer to sit back and relax, or use your time more wisely, you can do that too.
It seems that the automation systems in the new cars will operate like a light switch. So, one minute it’s on, and the next it’s off again. In simple terms, driverless cars will give people like you and me an option. What you choose is down to you and you alone.
More Crashes?
At the moment, the tests don’t look good. Indeed, Tesla had to report a significant accident with one of its models, and there have been other accounts.
Of course, taking power out of the driver’s hands is a problem because it shifts the responsibility. Come on - no one wants to seek help after a truck wreck due to a software malfunction. However, there is a silver lining.
It’s only the early stages of testing, and problems are bound to arise. When the car does hit the market, the odds are high that few problems will occur. Sure, they won’t be infallible, but nothing is perfect. Not even you when you’re behind the wheel.

Buy Or Rent?
To buy or rent – that is the question? The boffins in the industry think that people are more likely to rent. The nerds see it as a service that people can order at the touch of a button without the current hassle.
As hundreds of companies will saturate the market, the cost will decrease by a large margin. Think of it like Uber but even cheaper and without a driver. Some people will still drive the old school way, yet the model of ownership is bound to change.
Who Will Lead The Market?
In today’s industry, corporations like Ford, Volkswagen, and Toyota rule like kings. After all, they got into the business at the perfect time and cemented their status. That will change in the future – of that there is no doubt.
Driverless technology levels the playing field as no one understands how to make it work. In fact, the major players will be at a disadvantage if anything as Tesla and Google will take control. Yes, the current leaders will copy and follow suit, but they won’t have the same prestige or reputation.
The pioneers of the technology will get the plaudits, and they will use their status to their benefit.
