But, on the state of the criminal laws of Ogun State where the alleged acts were committed, it would be easier for a camel to pass through the eyes of a needle than to convict him, and the decision to arraign him in court is a naked abuse of prosecutorial discretion!
Giving a dog a human name, no matter the status of the dog's human namesake, is not a crime simpliciter, and the dogman did not require a police permit to walk his dog in public places.
Those making the point that it offends the sensibilities of Muslims to give a dog a human name must also realize that the dogman was entitled to assume that Nigeria is a secular state, and that Ogun State is not governed by Sharia Laws.
Besides, President Buhari, the dog's namesake, is a secular political figure, and not a religious one; thus recourse to religious sensibilities are simply jejune. If a man were to name his dog Jesus, or Mohammed, I will personally participate in lynching him; but then, that is a totally different matter!
In any event, are we to expect a galaxy of dog name prosecutions in Ogun State, instituted on behalf of thousands of ordinary citizens like Jimmy and Pedro who have thousands of namesakes in the dog-world?
