This
is not an opinion. This is not one of those theories that can be waved
away with one of the many anti-Ozil catchphrases regularly heard during
conversations about Arsenal's chief playmaker.
"Yeah, but he doesn't work hard enough". "Yeah, but he never does it in big games". "Yeah, but he doesn't run around like a madman and we therefore refuse to acknowledge any of his qualities".
Those
statements are no longer valid - and here's why.
We asked our exceptionally well-informed friends at Opta to pull out the
name of every player in Premier League history who has at least 20
assists to his name.
They then went through that entire list of top assist-providers and figured out how often they each set up a goal.
And look who's at the top, with 21 assists in 57 Arsenal games. Yes, Mesut Ozil, who creates a goal every 2.71 games.
Even
better news for Arsenal fans: the man he has just dethroned is Man
United legend Eric Cantona, who registered 56 assists in 156 Premier
League games (an average of one every 2.79 games).
