After spending the whole day in the classroom, more school-work is the last thing most kids want to do when they get home!
Founder of the new English literacy app LessonBuzz, and education expert, Marie Cullen has a trick or two for taking the hard work out of homework – here are her 5 top tips!
1. Light and bright
Learning doesn’t have to be uncomfortable or boring! Treat your kids to a special area that is reserved for storing their text-books, study material and computer or iPad. Their study area should have a good-sized desk and be well-lit to aid with focus, and prevent distraction.
2. Get involved, stay involved
Rather than just checking in once a week, get involved with your kids’ learning every day. Reading to your kids and getting involved in their homework can be fun ways to learn and spend time together. It’s also a great way to keep track of what they are working on, so you are up to date on what’s going on in their school life.
3. Reach out
Regardless of your (suppressed) memories of school, teachers are now your friends! Reach out to them to get feedback on your kids’ progress, and ask for recommendations on areas of improvement. Teachers see your kids in a different environment than you do, so they might have some surprising insights.
4. Get help from the right people
If you want to spend extra dollars on special tuition or tutors, make sure it’s going to be truly effective and efficient. It shouldn’t be just additional homework-help: instead, find teachers who can educate your kids, build up their skills and tap into their strengths.
5. Use the right tools
Today’s technology has made education more interactive and accessible to children of all ages. Apps are a convenient way to use the power of technology at school and at home. A successful app should provide an engaging, fun way to learn, but also measure improvements and deliver high-quality content.
